Chipped and damaged teeth can be both an esthetic and functional concern for patients. When a tooth's physical structure is compromised, they can be more prone to breakage or dental decay. At Refresh Dental, we offers veneers as one treatment option for chipped, discolored or misshapen teeth. If any of these issues is a concern for you, veneers may be a treatment option that is suitable for you.
What are veneers?
Veneers are small and thin porcelain coverings that are fabricated in the lab and cemented onto your existing teeth. They are made out of a tooth colored material that is matched to your natural teeth to try and get the most natural looking smile possible.
Our general dentists will mount these veneers on a patient's teeth carefully. They'll use a dental adhesive to cement the veneers, which ensures the veneers stay in place through regular eating, brushing, flossing, etc. Once cemented, the veneers are fixed in place and resemble natural teeth.
What are the biggest advantages?
Our dentist will explain the expectations and limitations of this procedure in detail so you can make an informed decision if this treatment is appropriate for you. Here's a brief look at some of the advantages:
- Functional - Veneers function like natural teeth and in most cases patients are able to enjoy all the foods that they would with natural teeth.
- Durability - With proper care, veneers can be a very stable restoration. Make sure you visit a dental professional regularly to help keep the teeth and surrounding structures healthy and disease free.
- Stain resistant - Certain food items like tea, coffee, wine, smoking, etc, can stain natural teeth over time. Veneers are more resistant and will not change color over time.
- Conservative tooth preparation - The veneer is very thin so in most cases minimal tooth structure is removed to prepare the teeth for veneers.
How do we place porcelain veneers?
This procedure is in most cases completed in two visits after the initial consultation and planning stages, however in some cases, additional appointments may be required. Once all the options have been reviewed and a patient has chosen veneers as a treatment, the planning stage begins. During the planning stage, our general dentist will often take an impression to create a model of your teeth to obtain accurate measurements of teeth size, shape, and alignment. In most cases, a wax mock-up of the proposed veneers is fabricated and presented during the planning stage. Porcelain veneers are fabricated based on the wax up to try and create the most natural esthetic smile possible. This planning stage is very important to the final product.
At the first treatment appointment, our dentists will prepare the natural teeth for the new veneers. An impression is taken of the preparation and sent to the dental laboratory to have the veneers fabricated. Temporary veneers are fabricated for you to wear while the veneers are being fabricated. At the second treatment session, the temporary veneers are removed and the lab fabricated veneers are tried in. Any adjustments required are completed. Once fit and esthetics are confirmed, the veneers are applied carefully to the tooth surface using a dental cement that is designed for these restorations.
