What Is the Canadian Dental Care Plan?

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal program that helps cover the cost of oral health care for Canadian residents without private dental insurance. It is administered by Sun Life. If you qualify, the plan pays a portion of your treatment directly to us, and you pay only your co-payment plus any charges the plan does not cover.

Do You Qualify?

No Private Dental Insurance

You cannot have access to private dental coverage through work, a pension, a family member, a professional or student organization, or a plan you bought yourself. This includes health spending accounts that cover dental. You are considered to have access even if you never use it, chose not to enrol, or it only covers part of your costs.

A Filed Canadian Tax Return

You, and your spouse or common-law partner if you have one, must have filed your tax return in Canada for the previous year so your family income can be assessed.

Adjusted Family Net Income Under $90,000

Your adjusted family net income must be less than $90,000. Your income also determines your co-payment, which is explained in the next section. Sun Life confirms this figure from your tax return, not from us.

Canadian Residency

You, and your spouse or common-law partner if applicable, must be a Canadian resident for tax purposes.

What You Will Pay

Your co-payment depends on your adjusted family net income. If it is under $70,000, the CDCP covers 100% of eligible services at CDCP established fees. Between $70,000 and $79,999, the plan covers 60% and you pay 40%. Between $80,000 and $89,999, the plan covers 40% and you pay 60%. We will always walk you through exactly what the plan covers and what you will owe before we begin any treatment.

Questions About the CDCP?

Straight answers about qualifying, what you will pay, and what to bring to your first visit.

Do I have to pay anything if I am covered by the CDCP?

Usually yes, at least something. You should not have to pay the full cost up front, because we bill Sun Life directly. But you may owe a co-payment based on your family income, plus the difference if our fee is higher than the CDCP established fee for that service. We give you those numbers before treatment starts, never after.

What does the CDCP cover?

The plan covers a broad range of care, including diagnostic and preventive services, basic services such as fillings, major services, anesthesia or sedation, and orthodontic services. Some treatments require Sun Life's pre-approval, and some are subject to frequency limits. We will confirm your specific coverage before treatment.

How do I apply for the CDCP?

You apply through the Government of Canada, not through our office. Visit canada.ca and search “Canadian Dental Care Plan,” or contact Service Canada. Once Sun Life confirms your enrolment and sends your member card, book with us and we will handle the billing.

I am already a CDCP member. What do I bring to my first visit?

Bring your Sun Life CDCP member card or your client number, and a piece of government-issued ID. Call us at 780-705-5557 if you are unsure whether your coverage is active and we will help you check.
