When Dental Pain Cannot Wait

Some dental problems can wait for a routine appointment. Others get worse by the hour. Pain that keeps you awake, swelling in the face or gums, a tooth knocked loose or knocked out, bleeding that will not stop, or a broken tooth with a sharp edge all need to be looked at quickly, because the underlying cause rarely settles on its own. Our office keeps room for urgent problems during opening hours, and we are open until 8pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and until 7pm on Thursdays, which is often when a problem that started at work becomes impossible to ignore.

Emergencies We See Most Often

Severe or Persistent Toothache

Constant, throbbing, or radiating pain usually means the nerve inside the tooth is involved or infection has taken hold. Painkillers may mask it for a while, but the cause keeps progressing. We will find the source, tell you what is happening, and explain the options before we begin anything.

Chipped, Cracked, or Broken Tooth

A broken tooth can be anything from a rough edge to a fracture that exposes the nerve. Even when it does not hurt, the exposed surface is vulnerable and can decay or split further. Bring any pieces you have kept, and avoid chewing on that side until we have seen it.

Knocked-Out or Loosened Tooth

A tooth that has been knocked out is genuinely time-sensitive, and the sooner it is seen the better the chance of saving it. Handle it by the crown, not the root, and keep it moist. Call us on your way in so we know you are coming.

Swelling, Abscess, or Lost Filling

Facial or gum swelling suggests infection and should be assessed promptly. A lost filling or crown leaves the tooth underneath unprotected and often sensitive to air, cold, and pressure. Neither improves with time, and both are usually straightforward to deal with when caught early.

Before You Reach Us

A few things help while you are on your way. Rinse gently with warm salt water to keep the area clean. Use a cold compress on the outside of the cheek for swelling. Take your usual over-the-counter pain relief as directed on the package, and never place aspirin or any tablet directly against the gum, which burns the tissue. If a tooth has been knocked out, hold it by the crown, do not scrub the root, and keep it in milk until you arrive. If you are dealing with bleeding that will not stop, a significant facial injury, or swelling that is affecting your breathing or swallowing, treat that as a medical emergency and go to the nearest emergency department or call 911. We are closed on Sundays, and our hours vary through the week, so please call before coming in if you can.

Emergency Questions, Answered

Costs, coverage, walk-ins, and what happens outside our opening hours.

Can I walk in, or do I need an appointment?

You can walk in during opening hours, and you are welcome to. Calling 780-705-5557 first is still worth doing when you can, because it lets us prepare and give you a realistic idea of the wait. We fit urgent problems in around scheduled patients, so the wait depends on the day.

What will an emergency visit cost?

An emergency visit usually starts with an examination, and often an X-ray, to identify the cause. Our fees follow the Alberta Dental Fee Guide, and we will tell you the cost of any treatment before we start it. If the full treatment needs a second visit, we will say so up front rather than at the end.

What if it is after hours or a Sunday?

We are closed Sundays, and our weekday hours vary, so check our hours before setting out. For bleeding that will not stop, a facial injury, or swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, do not wait for us to open, go to the nearest emergency department. For pain that is manageable, keep the area clean, use over-the-counter pain relief as directed, and call us when we open.

Will my insurance or the CDCP cover an emergency visit?

Often, at least in part. We offer direct billing and can submit your claim electronically, so in most cases you are not paying the full amount up front. If you are covered by the Canadian Dental Care Plan, we bill Sun Life directly. Bring your insurance details or CDCP member card if you have them, and we will check your coverage while you are here.
