More Than a Cosmetic Fix

Losing teeth changes more than appearance. Chewing becomes harder and diet often narrows as a result. Speech can shift. The remaining teeth start to drift toward the gaps, which changes the bite and makes them harder to clean. Over time the jawbone that once supported those teeth begins to shrink, which is why a denture that fitted well a few years ago can gradually loosen. Replacing missing teeth addresses all of that, not just the look of the gap.

Options We Discuss

Complete Dentures

Used when all the teeth in an arch are missing. The denture rests on the gum and is shaped to the ridge underneath, so a good fit depends on careful impressions and usually a few adjustments once you have been wearing it.

Partial Dentures

Where some healthy teeth remain, a partial fills the gaps and clasps onto the existing teeth for support. Keeping your own teeth where possible is almost always preferable, and a partial is designed around them.

Relines and Adjustments

Gums and bone change shape over the years, so a denture that once fitted snugly can start to rock or rub. A reline reshapes the fitting surface to match the ridge as it is now, which is far simpler than replacing the whole denture.

Repairs

Cracks and broken clasps are common, particularly after a drop. Bring the pieces in rather than trying to glue them, because household adhesives are not safe in the mouth and can make a proper repair impossible.

The First Few Weeks

New dentures feel strange, and it is worth knowing that in advance so it does not come as a surprise. Most people notice increased saliva at first, some awareness of bulk, and that certain sounds take practice. Eating is easiest if you start with softer food cut small and chew on both sides at once rather than favouring one. Sore spots in the first couple of weeks are normal and usually fixed with a small adjustment, so tell us rather than enduring it. Take them out overnight unless we have advised otherwise, and clean them daily with a brush made for dentures rather than regular toothpaste, which is abrasive enough to scratch the surface.

Denture Questions, Answered

Timelines, fit, daily care, and what coverage usually applies.

How long does the whole process take?

Usually several appointments over a few weeks rather than a single visit. Impressions, a try-in stage to check fit and appearance, and then fitting, followed by one or two adjustment visits once you have worn them for a while. We will give you a timeline specific to your situation at the consultation.

Will they slip when I eat or talk?

A well-fitting denture should stay put for normal eating and speaking, though most people need a few weeks of practice before it feels automatic. If yours moves noticeably, that usually means the fit needs adjusting or the ridge underneath has changed, both of which we can address.

How do I look after them?

Clean them daily over a folded towel or a basin of water, so a drop does not crack them. Use a denture brush and a cleaner made for the purpose rather than regular toothpaste. Rinse after meals, and unless we have told you otherwise, leave them out overnight so the gum tissue gets a rest.

Is any of this covered?

Dentures are frequently covered at least in part. We offer direct billing and can submit your claim electronically, and our fees follow the Alberta Dental Fee Guide. If you qualify for the Canadian Dental Care Plan we bill Sun Life directly, though some denture work needs pre-approval, which we handle before starting.
