Building Good Habits Early

The habits a child forms around dental visits tend to last. A child who learns early that a check-up is routine, quick, and nothing to dread usually carries that into adulthood, while one whose first visit happens because something already hurts often does not. Our team is trained to work with younger patients, and we take the time to explain what we are doing in language a child understands before we do it. Parents are welcome to stay alongside their child throughout.

Care for Younger Patients

First Visits and Check-Ups

A first appointment is mostly about getting comfortable. We look at how the teeth and jaw are developing, count and check what has come through, and let your child get used to the chair and the room without any pressure.

Cleanings for Small Teeth

Children's teeth collect plaque in different places than adults', particularly along the gumline and between molars. A gentle cleaning removes what a toothbrush at home has missed, and gives us a chance to show your child where they are consistently missing.

Treating Decay in Baby Teeth

Decay in baby teeth still matters. Left alone it can cause pain, affect eating and sleep, and interfere with the adult tooth forming underneath. Caught early, it is usually simple and quick to deal with.

Watching How Teeth Come In

Between roughly six and twelve, baby teeth give way to adult ones, and crowding, spacing, or bite problems often first become visible. Spotting these while the jaw is still growing means options are wider and any later treatment is usually simpler.

Making the Visit Easy

Most children who dislike the dentist are reacting to the unfamiliar rather than to pain. We work slowly, narrate what we are about to do, and let your child hold or look at instruments before they are used. If your child is anxious, tell us when you book and we will allow extra time so nothing has to be rushed. Appointments after school are usually easier than late afternoon on an empty stomach, and our Tuesday and Wednesday evenings run until 8pm, with Thursdays until 7pm, which gives you options that do not mean pulling them out of class.

Parent Questions, Answered

First visits, nervous kids, coverage, and what to expect at each stage.

When should my child first see a dentist?

Earlier than most parents expect. The general guidance in Canada is a first visit around a child's first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth appearing. That early appointment is short and mostly about a look and a conversation, but it establishes the routine and lets us catch anything unusual while it is still small.

My child is nervous about going. What can we do?

Tell us when you book so we can allow extra time. It also helps to keep your own language neutral at home, describing the visit as a check rather than reassuring them it will not hurt, since that plants the idea that it might. For a very anxious child, we are happy to do a short visit where nothing is treated at all, just to get familiar with the room.

Is my child's dental care covered?

Often, yes. We offer direct billing and can submit your claim electronically, so you generally are not paying the full amount up front. If your family qualifies for the Canadian Dental Care Plan, we are a participating provider and bill Sun Life directly. Our fees follow the Alberta Dental Fee Guide.

How often should my child come in?

For most children, every six months works well. Some need to be seen more often, usually where there is a history of decay or where teeth are crowded and harder to clean. We will tell you what we recommend for your child specifically, and why, rather than applying one schedule to everyone.
