What a Veneer Actually Is

A veneer is a thin shell bonded to the visible surface of a tooth. Rather than repairing damage from within, it covers the front of the tooth and changes what you see, which is why veneers are used for appearance rather than for strength or decay. They work best on front teeth that are structurally sound but the wrong shape, shade or length. A tooth that is heavily decayed or cracked through usually needs a crown or a filling instead, and we would tell you that at the consultation rather than proceed with something that will not last.

When Veneers Are Worth Considering

Chips and Worn Edges

Small chips and edges worn flat over years of grinding or acidic wear can be rebuilt to an even line. If grinding caused the wear, that needs addressing too, or the same thing happens to the veneer.

Discolouration Whitening Will Not Shift

Whitening works on stains within natural enamel. It does nothing for a tooth darkened from the inside after an old injury or root treatment, or for grey banding from certain medications. A veneer covers what whitening cannot reach.

Small Gaps and Uneven Teeth

Minor spacing or a tooth slightly out of line can sometimes be visually corrected with veneers. For anything more than minor, moving the teeth properly is the better answer, and we will say so rather than mask a bite problem.

Teeth That Look Short or Narrow

Where teeth are naturally small relative to the smile, or worn shorter over time, veneers can restore proportion. This is where planning matters most, because length and width affect speech and how the lip sits.

What the Process Involves

Veneers begin with a consultation where we look at the teeth, discuss what you want to change, and decide honestly whether veneers are the right tool. If they are, a small amount of enamel is usually removed from the front of the tooth so the veneer sits flush rather than looking bulky. That step is irreversible: once enamel is reduced, the tooth will always need a covering of some kind, and any future veneer will need replacing rather than simply removing. Veneers are then made to fit, and bonded at a later appointment. They do not stain or whiten the way natural enamel does, so the shade is chosen at the start and stays fixed, which is worth thinking about if you are also considering whitening your other teeth.

Veneer Questions, Answered

Longevity, tooth preservation, cost, and what happens later on.

Are veneers permanent?

The veneer itself is not permanent, but the preparation of the tooth is. Because a layer of enamel is usually removed so the veneer can sit flush, that tooth will need a veneer or crown from then on. Veneers are replaced rather than removed. It is the single most important thing to understand before starting, which is why we go through it at the consultation rather than on the day.

How long do they last?

Many years with good care, though they are not indefinite. What shortens their life most is grinding, biting hard objects, and gum recession exposing the margin at the edge. If you grind your teeth, we will usually recommend protecting them at night, because that is the most common reason a veneer fails early.

Will they look artificial?

They should not. Shade, translucency and proportion are all chosen deliberately, and the goal is teeth that suit your face rather than a uniform block of white. We will show you the intended shape and shade before anything is bonded permanently, so there are no surprises.

What do veneers cost, and is there coverage?

Cost depends on how many teeth are involved and the material used, so we quote after the consultation rather than over the phone. Our fees follow the Alberta Dental Fee Guide. Be aware that insurance plans usually treat veneers as cosmetic and do not cover them, though we will check your specific plan and tell you what it says before you commit.
